Chronic Kidney Disease

& Complex Chronic Illness

Integrating traditional medicine with clinical experience and evidence-based healthcare.

Adrian Harper, Melbourne naturopath with a clinical focus on chronic kidney disease, renal health and complex chronic illness.

With over 16 years of clinical experience, I practise as a naturopath in Melbourne, working predominantly within integrative medicine and collaborative-care settings. My primary clinical focus is Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and renal health, supporting people across all stages of kidney disease, including advanced CKD, dialysis and kidney transplantation. I also have extensive experience in complex chronic illness, particularly Mould Biotoxin Illness (CIRS), immune and autoimmune disorders, chronic infections, and complex gut and microbiome conditions.

My interest in naturopathic medicine began through my own experience of living with chronic kidney disease. This has given me both a clinical and personal understanding of the challenges involved in managing kidney disease and has strongly shaped my approach to complementary care. I use individualised nutrition, nutritional and herbal medicine, food as medicine and lifestyle interventions alongside conventional medical care, with particular attention to safety, pathology and the specific requirements of people with impaired kidney function.

I hold a Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy) from the Southern School of Natural Therapies and a Master of Public Health (Global Health) from the University of Melbourne, and have previously lectured in Naturopathy and Nutrition at the Southern School of Natural Therapies. My additional training includes yoga teaching and yoga therapy in Australia and India, along with further training in mould-related illness and environmental health.

I am available for in-person consultations on Wednesdays at Melbourne Holistic Doctors in Kew, and Australia-wide via Telehealth from Thursday to Saturday.

Areas of Practice

Chronic Kidney Disease & Renal Failure

Whether you have recently been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, are managing advanced CKD, receiving haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, or have undergone kidney transplantation, nutrition and complementary medicine can play an important role in supporting your overall health and quality of life.

My approach is individualised according to your stage of kidney disease, underlying diagnosis, pathology results, medications and current medical treatment. Care may incorporate renal nutrition, herbal and nutritional medicine, food as medicine and lifestyle strategies, with consideration of factors such as blood pressure and metabolic health, inflammation, gut and microbiome health, cardiovascular risk and the nutritional complications that can develop as kidney function declines.

Complementary care is designed to work alongside your nephrologist, GP and renal healthcare team, with particular attention to the safety and suitability of nutritional supplements and herbal medicines in people with impaired kidney function.

Mould Biotoxin Illness (CIRS)

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), or Mould Biotoxin Illness, is a complex chronic condition associated with exposure to water-damaged buildings in susceptible individuals. It can contribute to persistent inflammation and a wide range of symptoms affecting multiple body systems. A comprehensive approach considers both the individual's health and the environment in which they live or work.

Complex Chronic Illness

Complex chronic illness can involve persistent, multisystem symptoms with multiple contributing factors rather than a single underlying cause. Presentations may include chronic fatigue and ME/CFS, immune and autoimmune dysfunction, chronic or recurrent infections, mast cell activation (MCAS), and persistent gut and microbiome disorders such as IBS and SIBO. A comprehensive assessment considers the broader health history and potential contributing factors, including immune dysregulation, gastrointestinal dysfunction, environmental exposures, infection, metabolic health and lifestyle factors.
